A look at every matchup on the schedule for Week 1 of Valley high school football

By Bryan Ramos

ootball season is officially back in the RGV as high school teams across the Valley are set to kickoff Week One. While everybody loves the Friday night lights, there’s plenty of action on the gridiron going down tonight. Here’s a breakdown of some key matchups and a list of every single Week 1 game on the schedule this weekend.

Thursday, Aug. 30

McAllen Memorial @ Brownsville Hanna – 7 p.m. – The Mustangs and the Eagles give us Thursday’s best Valley matchup as two playoff teams from a season ago clash in Week 1. Campbell Speights and the Mustangs will be looking to get out to a hot start in 2018 while the Eagles look to put last year’s heartbreaking playoff loss behind them. If you’re in the Brownsville area, trust me, Campbell Speights is special to see play in-person.

Rio Hondo @ La Joya Juarez-Lincoln – 7 p.m.

Santa Maria @ MMA – 7 p.m.

Weslaco High @ Nikki Rowe – 7 p.m. – The Warriors and the Panthers are set to square off at Veterans Memorial Stadium in McAllen. Nikki Rowe was a playoff team a season ago while Weslaco was on the outside looking in. Both teams hope to get off to a hot start in Week 1.

Edinburg Economedes @ PSJA Southwest – 7 p.m.

Laredo United @ Edinburg Vela – 7 p.m. – Vela has grown into one of the top programs in the Valley and they’ll look to prove 2018 will be more of the same as they host Laredo United tonight at Richard R. Flores Stadium in Edinburg.

Edcouch-Elsa @ Corpus Christi Veterans – 7 p.m.

Friday, Aug. 31

Mission Veterans vs Mission High – 7:30 p.m. – The Battle of Conway is the game of the week every where you look and for good reason. All-State selection Landry Gilpin leads the Patriots high-scoring offense into the rivalry game against the Eagles, a team on the rise under Head Coach Koy Detmer in 2018. Look for an aerial attack from both sides in the Week 1 game of the week.

Landry Gilpin
Mission Veterans Memorial quarterback Landry Gilpin was an All-State selection in 2017 and is looking to repeat as the Valley’s top player this season.
