he closing act of UTRGV’s 2017-2018 Distinguished Speaker Series is Daymond John, a businessman and entrepreneur turned TV star and motivational speaker, who’s set to take the stage of the UTRGV Performing Arts Complex Wednesday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m. in a free and open to the public event.
John is most famously known as the founder and CEO of the hip-hop clothing brand FUBU, an acronym which means For Us, By Us, and for being one of the stars on the ABC reality show ‘Shark Tank’.
“From his wildly successful role on ABC’s smash hit, Shark Tank, to his distinguished status as a Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship, Daymond John has become globally recognized for his relentless commitment to promoting and supporting entrepreneurs,” says the events Facebook page.
John got his start as an entrepreneur in the early 90s after his mother taught him how to sew. He then created FUBU out of his mother’s house while also working full-time at Red Lobster, and eventually had rappers and hip-hop stars rocking his clothes and hats in their music videos and at shows. FUBU has earned over $6 billion around the world in global sales and at its peak, raked in $350 million in six years. I even wore a FUBU shirt in my 5th grade school picture.
Since then, John has authored four books, including his most recent work “Rise and Grind: How to Out-perform, Out-work, and Out-hustle the Competition”, and has appeared on more than 150 episodes of Shark Tank.
Doors open at 7 p.m. for UTRGV students, faculty and staff with a valid UTRGV ID and 7:15 p.m. for the general public. The event will start at 7:30 p.m. inside the UTRGV Performing Arts Complex.
