As a kid playing and being a huge sports fan, there was nothing I wanted more than to grow up and play sports professionally. Sadly, those childhood dreams didn’t pan out, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have the chance to turn your dream of playing soccer professionally into a reality.
The Rio Grande Valley FC Toros of the United States Soccer League and Houston Dynamo affiliate are offering that opportunity as they prepare to host tryouts Saturday and Sunday to hopefuls with dreams of playing soccer professionally.
Entering its third year, RGVFC has had an up and down two years on the pitch. In the team’s inaugural season in 2016, the Toros managed a second place finish in the Western Conference with a record of 14-7-9. The Toros followed that up with a 9-15-8 finish in 2017, which put RGVFC in 11th place and the season’s end.
Now, you can be a part of that turnaround as RGVFC looks to bounce back in 2018.
New Head Coach Gerson Echeverry and technical staff will be onsite to evaluate the talent taking part in the tryout. Echeverry begins his first year with RGVFC after spending the last five as the Head Coach of the Seton Hall University Pirates men’s soccer team.
“I’m proud to become a part of the Houston Dynamo organization, excited for the opportunity to coach the RGV FC Toros and am looking forward to becoming a part of the Valley community,” Echeverry said in a December news release after being named head coach. “The opportunity to develop a team in the USL and to help develop young professionals and hopefully help them move on to the first team in Houston is something I’m very excited about.”
Anybody 18 and over is eligible to register and tryout. There is a $100 online registration fee prior to the event, or a $150 registration fee if you wait til the day of to register.
The tryouts will be held at the H-E-B Park Practice Fields located at 1616 S Raul Longoria Rd in Edinburg. On Saturday, registration will begin at 2 p.m. while the tryouts will kickoff from 3:30 – 6:30 p.m. Tryouts will continue Sunday from 9:30 a.m. – noon.
Just picture yourself being a Valley boy representing on the RGVFC Toros. If you’re giving it a go, good luck!
