From musical festivals to day parties, SPI offers plenty of fun for Spring Breakers

By Brenda Garza

very year, there is just one thing students think about once the New Year is over, and that my friends is Spring Break. Now, us Valley kids, know that there is one place to go and that’s South Padre Island, better known as South Party Island.

Just to give you a clue as to how popular South Padre Island, or SPI is, U.S. News Travel ranked it #10 in its yearly Top 10 Best Spring Break Destination review, however, it’s also been ranked #2 in the nation for drug and alcohol infested Instagram photos. So, please keep those pictures to a minimum people!

Not only is SPI ranked 10th as one of the Best Spring Break Destinations, but it was also ranked fifth on both Best Cheap Spring Break Destination and Best Places to Visit in Texas on U.S. News Travel. Now we Valley folk take it for granted that it’s literally in our back yard, but for those traveling in, it’s the best hidden treasure in the nation!

Okay! So back to why SPI is so popular. Well, let me tell you. From the beach to the bay, from the rescued turtle sanctuaries to fishing, bungie jumping to parachuting, SPI has it all, including some of the best concerts around, including UME, Ultimate Music Experience, where uber awesome DJs from around the world come to entertain thousands of diehard EDM, Electric Dance Music, enthusiasts.

So here is Spring Break at South Padre in a nut shell. It all gets started with the Beach Bash concert series at Isla Grande Beach Resort on Saturday, March 10. The Beach Bash features some of the best concerts Spring Beak has to offer with The Fat Jew from noon to 6 p.m. at Isla Grande Beach Resort, then you head off to change and line up at Clayton’s Beach Bar. Their first Spring Break artist is none other than Post Malone. Doors will open at 8 p.m. and tickets are on sale at

Steve Aoki and the rising star, Migos, who’s filling-in after a pregnant Cardi B cancelled upcoming shows, will be live at the Rockstar Beach, or Isla Grande Beach Resort from noon to 6 p.m. on March 13. Now it is FREE with a PADREMANIAC card, so make sure you get it! This is a concert you don’t want to miss, especially if you feel like getting “caked.”

Hip-hop star Future will take the stage at Clayton’s Beach Bar Tuesday, March 13, with controversial Teka$hi69 performing at Clayton’s Wednesday, March 14. Doors open at 8 p.m.

Wednesday, March 14, is loaded for concert lovers because that day’s Beach Bash is stacked with Carnage, LiL Pump, and LiL Uzivert set to perform from noon to 6 p.m.

Friday and Saturday, March 16-17, are going to be slammed with the Ultimate Music Experience, UME, enthusiasts. Attendees beware, cross the bridge early, like, I’m talking a.m. style if you want to get there on time! The bridge that leads to Party Island will be jammed packed, so make sure you have ample time to get to your destination.

This 2-day event at Clayton’s Beach Bar will have headliners that will have you craving for more. On Friday, Alesso, Adventure Club, C Jones, and Whipped Cream will take the stage. Diplo, San Halo, K?D, and Bonnie X Clyde will perform on Saturday. Tickets are available at
